TOP STORY

💰 Students pay $1,199 in rent every month

We surveyed 650 students in Calgary, Kelowna, Toronto, Vancouver and Victoria about how they make housing decisions. The results were unsurprisingly concerning:

  • Average rent of $1,199 per person per month

  • 90% live with at least one roommate

  • 61% receive financial support from family

  • 64% make rent decisions based on price

  • 62% can’t afford their rent

This means that despite making all housing decisions to cut costs and receiving help from family, the majority of students still can’t afford what they pay in rent. Something has to change. Why shouldn’t we be the ones to change it?

🤔 What’s next for us?

Student housing is broken. We will be part of the solution.

In the past 1.5 years, we’ve used the research you’ve taken part in to help get 4,576 housing units approved in British Columbia. We’ve gone to bat for students over and over again to make sure that leaders understand how our generation wants to live.

We’re not done yet. Here’s what we’re up to:

  • Ongoing: Advising decision-makers on how to include students in new housing.

  • Today: Introducing Haus Hacks, a newsletter to share housing progress with young people.

  • In progress: Building a platform that reimagines the student housing experience.

Stay tuned.

🥳 Introducing Haus Hacks

Housing isn’t just a concern for students. It’s the problem.

Negativity dominates the outlook on housing, and understandably so. But with so much concern around the future of housing, young people need something that shows progress is being made.

As we continue to work hard to improve the state of housing, we will use Haus Hacks to share our progress, get your feedback, and make your voice heard.

We’re setting out to transform how students make housing decisions. Join us on the journey.

📉 Rent prices drop in Toronto and Vancouver

A report from Rentals.ca and Urbanation showed that on average in July, 2-bedroom rental rates increased from June, yet had fallen significantly compared to July 2023.

  • Vancouver: Down 6.4%

  • Toronto: Down 5.1%

  • Kelowna: Down 12.1%

Both Victoria and Calgary saw slight increases compared to July 2023. As a result of challenging economic conditions, there has been an influx of condo and rental listings in Toronto and Vancouver. This has driven down rental rates compared to last July.
